It’s been bugging Emmerdale fans all weekend – who is the man holed up in the barn, held prisoner by Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) and a reluctant Caleb Miligan (William Ash)?

The opening minutes of the soap’s big week of spectacle confirmed the identity of the unfortunate chap – with Danny Miller reprising his role as Aaron Dingle.

Viewers last saw Aaron a year ago, when he left the village not long after his young sister Liv was killed in the storm.

At the time, his mum Chas (Lucy Pargeter) had been cheating on Paddy (Dominic Brunt) with businessman Al Chapman, and she was pretty distracted from where her focus should be.

Despite her grieving son needing his mum more than ever before, she urged him to head back to Italy with his new boyfriend Marco.

There was clearly unfinished business, and now the character has made a dramatic return, angry and bound up in a barn, with Moira (Natalie J Robb) wanting answers from Cain.

Recently, when chatting to Metro.co.uk at the CUREUsher Ball held by Laura Norton and Mark Jordon, Danny was very coy with us when discussing the possibility of a comeback.

‘You never say never with soap,’ the actor said. ‘Maybe one day. I am enjoying being a dad of two now, I’m enjoying that wave, so we’ll see how it goes and how long it takes!’

Danny first joined Emmerdale in 2008 and has played Aaron on and off up until his appearance in the show’s 50th anniversary in 2022.

Aaron featured in many iconic storylines throughout his tenure on the show, including his beloved relationship with Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley).

Following Robert’s incarceration, he suffered more tragedy after boyfriend Ben Tucker was murdered by serial killer Meena Jutla, which led to him leaving the eponymous village for a fresh start.

Danny won particular praise for performances of scenes which saw tormented teen Aaron come out as gay and, some years later, for a story which saw him confide the abuse he suffered at the hands of his father Gordon.

Danny isn’t the only comeback coming to the Dales, as show boss Laura Shaw recently discussed further cast changes with Metro.co.uk.

‘Heading into the new year, we’re going to be introducing more exciting new characters – they’ll all be revealed nearer the time,’ she revealed.

‘We’ll be seeing a well-known face returning. We’ve got tragedy striking one family in the new year.

‘We’ve got one or two of our villagers getting into very serious trouble, at least one of which may end up with them being sent to prison, but we’ll see!’
