The Icelandic Meteorological Office has waned that the Fagradalsfjall volcano has a ‘significant likelihood’ of erupting following days of violent earthquakes.

The Reykjanes Peninsula volcanism had been inactive for 800 years, until it awoke from its long sleep back in 2020.

And thousands of earthquakes over the past week have raised fears that the Reykjanes will unleash its natural devastation on Iceland once again.

Deep cracks have already been forming beneath the surface around the town of Grindavík, with the seismic activity ripping roads in half, uprooting buildings and closing the nearby tourist spot, the Blue Lagoon.

The local community in Grindavík, on the island’s south west peninsula, have been forced from their homes and have taken cover in emergency shelters, leaving their livelihoods behind as mother nature threatens to rear its ugly head once again – 13 years after the infamous eruption of Eyjafjallajökull in 2010.
