Netflix film leaves ’emotional’ viewers ‘crying from beginning to end’

When it comes to films, Christmas is the time of year for old favourites – but Netflix viewers have been left stunned by an unexpected favourite this year.

Miracle in Cell No. 7, originally released in 2019, follows the story of Memo, a man with learning disabilities who is wrongfully imprisoned for murder.

The Turkish movie, which recently arrived on the streaming platform, is a remake of a 2013 Korean film of the same name and is popular with Netflix viewers.

It follows Memo’s story in prison as he makes friends with his fellow inmates amid a tense legal battle to outlaw capital punishment in Turkey.

Based on a true story from the 1970s, it’s directed by Mehmet Ada Öztekin and has been referred to by viewers as ‘an absolute game-changer’ for them.

One user reacting to the film, Rimrim, described the action as being ‘always emotional’ while awarding the Netflix hit a full score of 10 out of 10.

On TikTok, another user, Ree S, responded to somebody’s commentary on the film by saying: ‘Cried from beginning to end. I relate to that movie.’

As Miracle in Cell No.7 was described as the ‘best Turkish movie’ by user R Ken, another user, Demi Harkin, described how their heart ‘couldn’t handle’ the events depicted.

Memo is wrongfully accused not just of murder in the film but of murdering the child of a military officer, who immediately demands Memo’s execution.

Viewers also compared it to the 2001 Sean Penn drama I Am Sam, in which a father with learning disabilities fights to keep custody of his daughter.

One TikTok creator, Izarshlai, recorded a video of themselves reacting to the film, saying they were unable to make it past the 12-minute mark before crying.

Despite being the most popular with viewers on Netflix, the Turkish film is not the only remake of Miracle in Cell No. 7, which has now been remade three times.

The second remake, a Philippine version, was released in December 2019, while an Indonesian version was made shortly afterwards and released in 2022.

Earlier this month, Netflix viewers who sat down to watch drama series My Life with the Walter Boys were left similarly emotional and demanded more.

One viewer commented: I need 14 seasons of My Life with the Walter Boys and I’m so serious – it made my cold dead heart feel something.’
