Coronation Street legend Sally Ann Matthews shared on social media that her beloved uncle has died.

The Jenny Connor actress, 53, posted a picture of herself when she was yonnger with her late family member on the beach.

She captioned the post: ‘Today we said goodbye to Uncle Derek. A packed crowd for a wonderful man. He’d have hated the fuss but would’ve loved every single person there.’

Following the star’s sad announcement, friends from the acting world and beyond offered messages of sympathy and condolence.

Actress Sally Carman (Abi Webster) replied: ‘Sending you so much love, Sal 💛💛💛.’

Actor Andy Whyment (Kirk Sutherland) added: ‘Sending love Sal ❤️ x.’

Sally first appeared in Corrie from 1986 to 1991, before joining the cast of Emmerdale in 2005 for less than a year.

She returned to Corrie in February 2015.

In 2018, Sally Ann was previously teased with the prospect of meeting her famous Corrie cousin and both she and Amanda Barrie – best known as Alma Baldwin – were left in shock when they came face to face.

The pair worked together for four years before Sally Ann left during her original tenure and they noted how similar their characters are – with both of them being married to the businessman owner of Underworld.

As they reeled from the news, they were clearly delighted with Amanda – also known for her role as Bad Girls favourite Bev Tull alongside Stephanie Beacham – exclaiming: ‘It’s extraordinary! I don’t believe it. Funnily enough, I always felt close to Sally Ann. Now I feel closer and extremely proud.’

She added to Sally Ann, with a mischievous twinkle in her eye: ‘And I am so relieved by the DNA – now I’m so old, you may have organs to spare.’
