If you’re ordering a takeaway in London tonight, we might have some bad news for you – especially if you’re living in certain areas of the capital.
And it’s not just because of widespread strike action by Deliveroo, JustEat and Uber Eats delivery drivers.
Another thing most of us probably don’t even think about when we have a takeaway is the hygiene standards in the kitchen where our grub is being cooked.
Is the kitchen area and its facilities up to scratch? And what about the chef’s – are they all following safety protocol properly?
Unfortunately, it turns out the answer to those questions at quite a number of eateries is no.
There are 156 fast food outlets across London’s 32 boroughs which have a food hygiene rating of zero.
And one borough in particular has been revealed to have the worst proportion of restaurants that are falling well below the required level.
Sorry Waltham Forest residents – but out of 877 takeaways in the borough, 47 of them have a zero rating.
That’s a hefty 15.6% of the places to eat.
A further 71 eateries only had a rating of one and 17 a score of two, reports MyLondon.
According to the Food Standards Agency, a hygiene rating of zero means urgent improvement is necessary and one means major improvement is required.
Food Standards Agency: Hygiene rating meanings
- 0 – Urgent improvement necessary
- 1 – Major improvement necessary
- 2 – Improvement necessary
- 3 – Generally satisfactory
- 4 – Good
- 5 – Very good
