A fan of The Simpsons has revealed that the animated series made them think that the Planet of the Apes movie was actually a musical… for more than 30 years.
To be honest – that’s something we’d love to see.
The first Planet of the Apes film – which was loosely based on the novel by Pierre Boulle, came out in 1968, starred prolific actors including Charlton Heston and Roddy McDowall.
It spawned a successful franchise with more movies released in the 1970s, TV shows, and then a rebooted film series that has a new instalment coming out this year.
Anyone who’s seen any of them will know that they have a very dramatic tone, as humans and humanoid apes become embroiled in intense clashes and fights for dominance.
But in the mind of Reddit user Top_Possession_8099, it was an all-singing, all-dancing spectacle that they missed out on throughout their life, thanks to the way it was depicted in The Simpsons.
In a post shared on the social media platform, they wrote: ‘My wife told how much she loved Planet of the Apes to which I told her I never saw it because I don’t like musicals, and I already hate every ape I see, from Chimpan-A to Chimpan-Z.
‘She then told me it is very much not a musical. Took me 32 years to find this out.’
‘I guess [they] really made a monkey out of me.’
Oh you sweet, innocent soul.
The episode they were referring to, called A Fish Called Selma, was the 19th episode of the seventh season and first came out on March 24 1996.
One person in the comments on Reddit joked: ‘Maybe your wife just doesn’t appreciate legitimate thee-ate-er.’
Another remarked: ‘I unironically want to see that musical,’ while someone else revealed how The Simpsons had impacted their view of another iconic film.
‘According to the order in which I watch things Citizen Kane rips the Simpsons off about once every three minutes,’ they said.
Earlier this month, fans of The Simpsons were amazed to discover that yet another prediction made on the animated series had come true in an eerie coincidence.
Following the launch of Apple’s Vision Pro headset, an old episode from 2016 resurfaced where the characters use a very similar virtual reality device.
The Simpsons is available to stream on Disney Plus.
