Baldur’s Gate dev Larian is working on two new games and neither are licences

Larian Studios is working on not one but two new games, both of them based on their own IP – which could mean Divinity: Original Sin 3.

Now that they’re superstar developers, thanks to the unexpected success of Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian Studios can do pretty much whatever they want, including letting themselves be acquired by a larger publisher or working on another licensed product.

They’ve made it clear they don’t want to do either of those things though, ruling out the possibility of a buyout and recently announcing that they won’t work on any more Dungeons & Dragons games or DLC for Baldur’s Gate 3.

What their next game is remains a mystery, but Larian boss Swen Vincke has already revealed that it’s well underway and that he has a completed plan for the game’s first act. Or rather, he has a completed plan for one of the two new games he’s working on.

In a surprise revelation on Baldur’s Gate 3’s Steam page, Larian stated, ‘We’ve decided to seize this opportunity to develop our own IPs. We’re currently working on two new projects and we couldn’t be more excited about what the future has in store.’

‘It’s still early days – we’ll tell you more about those later down the line. But know that even as our focus turns to these new games, the sensibilities that brought you Baldur’s Gate 3 are alive and well here at the Larian castle,’ says the update.

There’s then a quote from Vincke himself: ‘I don’t know if we’re going to pull it off, but looking at our narrative, visual and gameplay plans, I think what we’re working on now will be our best work ever.

‘I get excited like a kid watching the key imagery, want to show it to everyone now and grumble in frustration at having to wait until it’s actually all working. Yes, it’s hype but it’s hype because it really looks and feels good.’

As you can see, there’s no indication of what either of the games are but, more than once, Vincke has suggested that he’d like to work on a sci-fi game. Although this announcement dashes our hopes that it might be a Star Wars game.

So, a reasonable guess would be that one of the new games is a new sci-fi IP and the other is, perhaps, Divinity: Original Sin 3 – a new entry in the fantasy series Larian worked on before Baldur’s Gate 3.

Or they could both be something completely different, we’ll just have to wait until an official announcement is made. Whatever they are, both games are expected to be in early access for at least a year before they’re released, so they may be playable sooner than you think…
