Three people have died and five were injured after a ‘fishing style boat’ and a speedboat crashed on a lake in Canada.

A man, 23, and two women aged 21 and 22 were killed when the vessels collided in the Bucks Bay area of Bobs Lake, Ontario at 9.30pm last night.

They were pronounced dead at the scene.

Five other people aged 12 to 44 were taken to hospital with a range of injuries, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) reported. One of the patients was airlifted with serious injuries.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said other people had been on the boats who were checked by paramedics but did not need to be hospitalised.

The force wrote on X that rescue boats and drones were used to help locate people in the lake.

In a video posted below the statement, an OPP spokesman said: ‘It’s a horrible situation, there were still people in the water when first responders arrived.

‘The investigation is ongoing. Our thoughts are with the families impacted by this tragedy at this time and we ask everyone to respect their privacy.’

It is not yet known whether speed or alcohol was a factor, or whether those on the boats were wearing life jackets, OPP Constable Rob Martell said on Sunday morning.

Meanwhile, in Hungary two people have been killed and five others are missing after two boats crashed on the Danube River.

Hungarian police say the crash between a small motor boat and a cruise ship happened late on Saturday evening, and was reported after a man with a bleeding head wound was found on the riverbank.

A man’s body was found close by, while the body of a woman was recovered further downstream.
