Fans mistakenly claim performer’s testicle was shown during Olympics opening ceremony

Viewers of the Olympics opening ceremony thought they’d spotted a major wardrobe malfunction as a performer’s testicle appeared to be on show.

In one of the more bizarre segments of the opening ceremony in Paris on Friday night, Philippe Katerine, a French singer-songwriter, was covered head to toe in blue body paint as he was unveiled by a giant cloche.

Katerine, who also had a bright orange beard, was wearing a fruit headdress and sash, and was meant to be portraying the Greek god Dionysus, although that may have been lost on many of the viewers.

But as Katerine began singing, viewers could not help but notice that one of the background performers wearing a black jacket appeared to have a testicle popping out of his pants as he stood motionless.

The performer and his rogue piece of flesh was on show for nearly 30 seconds before Katerine’s bed of fruit and flowers covered their genital area.

However, while many were convinced that a testicle was on show for the millions watching around the world and pictures of the incident have gone viral on social media, the reality is that it was a simple wardrobe malfunction involving the performer’s tights.

A round hole in the black tights started out as testicle-shaped when Katerine began his song but as the performer unfroze and danced, it became clear that the split was becoming bigger.

Later into the performance which then focused on a dance troupe who were floating along the River Seine, the camera cut back to Katerine’s background performers dancing to the music.

By that time, the hole in the performer’s black tights had ripped across nearly the entire front part of their right thigh.

It was not the only gaffe during a rain-soaked opening ceremony as the Olympic flag was raised upside down.

Earlier in the ceremony, the South Korea team were incorrectly introduced as athletes were put on boats and driven down the Seine.

Unfortunately, South Korea were announced as ‘the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’ – which is the full name of North Korea.

The South Korean sports ministry has said it planned to submit a ‘strong complaint with France on a government level’ over the error.

‘We deeply apologise for the mistake that occurred when introducing the Korean team during the opening ceremony broadcast,’ the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said in a post in Korean on X.

IOC president, Thomas Bach, also plans to meet with South Korea’s leader, Yoon Suk-yeol, over the mistake.
