Cobra Kai remains one of Netflix’s biggest original shows, and the creators have just announced it’s coming back to the streaming giant early.

The martial arts comedy-drama, which began as a sequel to the 1984 film The Karate Kid, has just begun its sixth and final season, with new episodes dropping on Thursday.

The first five episodes of the final season are all available to stream now, with the remaining 10 episodes being released in two more batches of five.

Fans who’ve already flown through the first five episodes of season six had expected the next batch to arrive at the end of November, but show creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald gave them a big surprise.

As the cast and superfans celebrated the season six premiere, the creator trio made the announcement that the season six part two premiere would drop two weeks early on November 15.

Two stars of the show, Ralph Macchio and William Zabka, were joined on stage by their co-stars Xolo Mariduena, Martin Kove, Mary Mouser, Jacob Bertrand, and Tanner Buchanan.

Fans in the audience welcomed the move by the streaming giant, which will see the middle third of the final season arrive much earlier than anticipated.

Set 34 years after the events of The Karate Kid, Cobra Kai looks at the events of the 1984 film from the perspective of Johnny Lawrence, played by Zabka, and follows his decision to reopen the titular karate dojo.

It also follows his decision to rekindle his old rivalry with Daniel LaRusso, played by Macchio, with the two eventually patching up their old relationship.

The series has been well-received throughout its run, with an average Rotten Tomatoes rating of 96% based on the first five seasons – the first season was certified fresh with 100%.

Each of Cobra Kai’s first two seasons was released through YouTube Red, a former streaming service that was rebranded as YouTube Premium before ceasing operations as a producer of original content.

At that point, the series was picked up by Netflix, where it has become one of the most-watched TV shows in the streaming platform’s history.

Following the release of its third season in 2020 – the first to be released by Netflix – it became the second most popular series on the platform, behind Bridgerton.

For the sixth and final season, the show’s creators have promised a big return among the cast, with one of the most important characters in the franchise set to make an appearance.

In the original film, Master Kim Sun-Young appeared in a photograph, played by Jun Chong, and is credited with the creation of The Way of the Fist.

C.S. Lee, who previously starred in Dexter, has reportedly joined the show’s cast for the final episodes, according to Deadline.
