The Simpsons fans have a lot to celebrate when season 36 premieres in September, and not just because the first episode is set to focus on Bart Simpson’s birthday.

Homer and co will be back on our screens on September 29, with an entire instalment dedicated to the youngster’s 11th party – aptly titled Bart’s Birthday.

During an appearance at San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend, TV bosses confirmed that the bash will have quite the guest list, with Tom Hanks, Danny DeVito, John Cena and Conan O’Brien – who previously wrote and produced the series in the early 90s – among the notable names.

Flocking to Reddit to unpack the news, many questioned whether Danny’s return meant that his iconic character, Uncle Herbert Powell, would be coming back to Springfield.

Discussing the cast list for the upcoming episode, fans on Reddit wondered whether Herb could be making a surprise visit for his nephew’s big day.

Benopo2006 penned of the announcement: ‘Is this Uncie Herb coming back?’

SurvivorFanDan replied: ‘I hope so! Most under-used Simpsons character ever.’

BigT-2024 cheered: ‘Uncie herb is back?!?!??!?’

As Best-Lettuce3074 added: ‘So, if Mr. DeVito is coming back, does this mean he’s reprising his role as Herbert Powell (Albiet with a retcon that suggests that he is Abe Simpson II’s half brother)?’

The Hollywood legend first appeared in season two, popping up as Homer’s half-brother in 1991’s Brother, Where Art Thou?

Homer’s world was turned upside down when his dad, Abe, revealed that he had a secret half-brother, following an affair with another woman – but his family member was put up for adoption.

The family were then introduced to Herb, who had founded his very own car company and become a huge success in business.

Sadly, the episode saw him put his faith in Homer’s wild designs for a new car – complete with two bubble domes, three separate horns and gigantic cup holders – and he ended up bankrupt.

Herb earned his fortune back in season three thanks to his best-selling invention of a baby translator, and $2000 from his sibling.

Although the businessman hasn’t appeared on screen since, Danny recorded an answering phone message as the character in season 24, confirming that he was ‘poor again’, without giving any further insight into how he lost his money.

Springfield is no stranger to huge celebrity cameos, with Michelle Obama, Michael Jackson, Mick Jagger, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry previously popping up.

Matt Selman, co-showrunner of the Simpsons, confirmed the Danny’s stint at SDCC, but he didn’t share any information on whether Herb would also be making an appearance.

‘It’s kind of (a) crazy, star-studded premiere,’ he said via Cracked.com. ‘It’s a pretty bold, big idea.’

Bring it on!
