With just days until the long-awaited Gavin and Stacey Christmas special airs on BBC, it seems fitting that James Corden has shared an emotional detail with us.
The comedy series first hit screens in 2007 and followed Mathew Horne’s Gavin Shipman and Joanna Page’s Stacey West relationship as their families – from Essex and Barry Island– got to know each other.
The show, which also starred creators Ruth Jones and James Corden as Nessa and Smithy, left fans with a cliffhanger with an unanswered proposal during the 2019 Christmas special.
Now, we are just days from all your questions being answered, with James sitting down on The Graham Norton Show to share what’s to come and even making an emotional admission about the episode’s last lines.
Like all of us, the talk show host was curious to hear all the details ahead of the episode’s airing date and asked James: ‘What was it like at the end? Did it feel like the end? Were you all crying? Was it really emotional, or is it going to hit you later on that it’s over?’
The former US-based star host quickly replied: ‘It was a very, very special day. We really kind of scheduled the show so that the very last line that we’ll ever hear in the episode is the last thing we shot.’
‘Which anyone will tell you is so rare that you ever do. Normally, your last day, you’re out on a motorway on your own in a car, and people go, “Well done,” and you go, “Bye then.’
He added: ‘But we really felt like we wanted everybody to be there at the very, very end, and it was just a lot of tears.’
The actor also spoke about what it was like being on set again, telling Graham it was particularly emotional for one Gavin and Stacey star who cried ‘basically every day’.
Revealing it to be none other than Joanna, he said each time the cast found themselves admiring being together on set again, the star would interrupt and say through tears: ‘Oh my God, can you believe this is the last time we’re ever going to be at Gwen’s?’
If not that, then she was constantly saying goodbye to things like Stacey’s shoes, clothes, the homes, adding: ‘And that was basically it for six weeks. It’s been a lot of goodbyes.’
Although the episode isn’t available to the public until December 25, a very select and special group of people were lucky enough to attend an advanced screening of it earlier this week.
James told Graham it was the first time ‘anybody has seen it’, and given the sheer cultural impact of the show, he said naturally, it was ‘very, very emotional’ and there were a lot of tears’ had by all.
James, who was also joined by Ruth on the talk show, confirmed the cast and crew will also be tuning in to watch the episode again with their families on Christmas day.
‘It’s how we watched the last one,’ he said.
It comes after BBC recently gave fans an idea of what would unfold, teasing: ‘In Barry, Bryn’s packing the Picasso in readiness for a trip to Essex.
‘Soon enough, Gavin, Stacey, and the rest of their family and friends are seen in high spirits with another get-together at Pam and Mick’s house.
‘This time it looks like Bryn will be giving limbo a go. Clearly, Pam and Mick are playing host this time around, but why are they partying?’
Gavin and Stacey: The Finale will air at 9pm on Christmas Day on BBC One and iPlayer. The documentary Gavin and Stacey: A Fond Farewell will be shown at 7pm on New Year’s Day on BBC One and Player.
