‘Dreadful’ 2019 horror movie soars up Netflix chart despite scathing reviews

A horror movie with an all-star cast is currently flying up the charts on Netflix, despite being panned as a ‘dreadful mess’.

Ma was released in May, 2019, with Octavia Spencer in the lead role as a lonely woman who befriends a group of teenagers, allowing them to party in her home before she begins terrorizing them in a brutal twist.

The Oscar-winner was joined in the cast by Diana Silvers, Juliette Lewis, Luke Evans, Missi Pyle and Allison Janney, while Tate Taylor served as director.

Despite hitting the big screen nearly six years ago, the divisive flick has raced up the global charts on Netflix this month, and is currently celebrating its second week inside the top 10.

Ma is the third most-watched movie this week, raking in more than 11.5million hours viewed and 7million total watches.

It was beaten into the top spot by The Secret Life of Pets 2 – released that same year – and Taron Egerton’s action blockbuster, Carry On, which hit the streaming service at the very end of 2024.

However, while viewers may be watching the scare-fest in their droves, reviews weren’t that kind to Tate’s film, which currently commands a critics Rotten Tomatoes score of 55%, compared to an audience ranking of 64%.

Grant Watson from Fiction Machine wrote: ‘It is as dreadful mess, but worse still it is a dull one.’

NME’s Alex Flood shared: ‘Certainly, no one could be bored by Ma, which is as unpredictable as its unstable protagonist.

‘There’s a ton of fun to be had here, just don’t expect it to make any sense.’

Ma- A lonely middle-aged woman befriends some teenagers and decides to let them party in the basement of her home. But there are some house rules: One of the kids has to stay sober, don't curse, and never go upstairs. They must also refer to her as Ma. But as Ma's hospitality starts to curdle into obsession, what began as a teenage dream turns into a terrorizing nightmare, and Ma's place goes from the best place in town to the worst place on Earth.

‘Ma is a totally bonkers experience with memorably macabre moments and anchored by a darkly comic performance from Octavia Spencer, but don’t go in expecting any more than that,’ Lewis Knight of the Daily Mirror agreed.

Patrick Cavanaugh from ComicBook.com said: ‘Octavia Spencer barely salvages this tonally uneven thriller that feels both too absurd and too restrained at the same time.’

As Shawn Edwards of Fox 4 Kansas added: ‘Octavia Spencer delivers an unnerving, daring performance…but this is stupid.’

Could we ever get a sequel? (Picture: Universal)

Although we haven’t heard a peep from Octavia’s ‘Ma’ Sue Ann since the credits rolled, filmmaker Tate previously revealed that he has an idea for a possible sequel in the future.

In a chat with Entertainment Weekly, he teased: ‘My idea is that she’s moved to another town, and she has open houses in another city and kills people in the open house.

‘I think she’d be a real estate agent in the Pacific Northwest, and just murder white people looking at McMansions. That’s as far as I’ve gotten!’

We absolutely need this to happen…

Ma is available to stream on Netflix now.
