The Masked Singer UK is back on screens, and we’ve had our first official reveal!
With Joel Dommett as host, Davina McCall, Jonathan Ross, and Mo Gilligan returned to the panel this weekend for a new series of the world-famous guessing game.
Joining them was Maya Jama, notepad and pen at the ready. The Love Island beauty replaces Rita Ora as the new detective behind the desk, who instead appears on the programme’s US version.
Last night, Dressed Crab, Kingfisher, Snail, Spag Bol, Tattoo, and Teeth became the first six characters to perform, leaving us scratching our heads as we pondered what their identities could be.
Fortunately, we didn’t have long to wait to discover the identity of Spag Bol, as they became the first contestant eliminated, meaning their mask was taken off. The panel saved Teeth in the bottom two.
Much to the shock of the studio audience and viewers at home—and after a major cliffhanger on Saturday night—Spag Bol was unveiled as Good Morning Britain’s Kate Garraway this evening.
Previous guesses from the judges included Judy Murray, Ruby Wax, and Julia Bradbury.
However, it seems viewers were bang on the money, as thousands of X users predicted Kate’s identity right away.
After her unveiling, Laurenn_Ellie posted: ‘Guessed Kate Garraway from the first verse’.
Essentialrhythm also tweeted: ‘I KNEW it was Kate Garraway’.
Unmasked, ITV star Kate, 57, joked that she’s aware she ‘can’t sing’ before dissecting some of the clues in her VT.
The appearance of a nail file in her first clue package referred to her hosting gig on Smooth Radio, while a riddle about her being from a ‘different camp’ was a nod to her time in I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!
Talking about her brief time on the show, Kate laughed: ‘I can’t sing, and I kept telling them (the production team) that, and they said, “It doesn’t matter”.’
Kate added: ‘Just to have an incredible chance to come out dressed as spaghetti and waddle around trying to sing. It’s been so much fun, and everybody’s been great.’
She also told Harriet Rose in a post-unmasking Q&A that the experience was a ‘career highlight’.
‘There is nothing better than being Spag Bol. It’s something that I’ve realised now was there right from childhood, it was a dream. At last it’s been realised,’ she quipped.
The surviving five characters will now remain in the competition in a bid to fool the panel even more.
But Spag Bol wasn’t our only reveal this weekend, as Giant Joel was also unveiled after weeks of suspense.
During the Christmas special, an incredible caricature of the presenter was introduced, and hints were given about who could be underneath the massive quiff.
After keeping audiences in suspense, Olympic legend Sir Mo Farah was unveiled underneath the costume—which, of course, included a vibrant pink suit—before joining the desk as a guest panellist.
Davina and Maya had incorrectly guessed that Geordie duo Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly were behind Giant Joel, who sang Lionel Richie’s Hello.
Following the shock twist, the running legend said of his time on the show: ‘It’s been incredible.’
The Masked Singer continues on ITV1 and ITVX next Saturday.
