Chris Eubank has revealed his ‘warrior’ son Chris Eubank Jr almost died in hospital after his fight with Conor Benn in a ‘touch-and-go situation’.
Eubank Jr spent two nights in the Royal London hospital after defeating Benn by unanimous decision at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday.
The boxing star was suffering with severe dehydration, leaving his legendary father very worried before he was was released on Monday.
Eubank, who surprisingly turned up at Saturday’s fight in a ring walk which went viral, given he had supposedly been estranged from his son for years, has opened up about the ordeal on his Call Chris YouTube show.
The 58-year-old says it reminded him of his own bout with Michael Watson in 1991, which left his opponent with life-changing brain injuries.
‘It just brought me back all those years ago to think about what Michael went through, and I was feeling and seeing and hearing all of that,’ Eubank said.
‘And I’m saying to myself, people don’t know, but my son is touch and go.
‘The only way we’re going to know whether he’s going to be okay is after the CT scans.
‘He suffered mostly in the hospital because of dehydration, even though the beating was severe.
‘Junior was lying down on a stretcher and he was sensitive to light, so he always had a towel and something over his eyes.
‘He had a shroud around him, around his eyes and head, and just his beard poking out.
‘And in that moment he looked exactly like Sebastian (Eubank Jr’s brother, who died in 2021 following a heart attack in Dubai), the spitting image.
‘It’s real for us. My son was in a touch-and-go situation. Life or death.’
Eubank wants his son to retire from boxing rather than risk his health in more fights.
‘He doesn’t respect that because he is a warrior and a warrior goes out on his shield, which he proved,” Eubank added.
‘He’s not going to listen to the rules. If he can evade and sidestep the rules, he will, because he is a warrior.
‘It would be an extraordinary blessing for him, if he was wise enough to walk off into the sunset, there is nothing cooler than that, you cannot buy that.
‘There are billionaires who would give everything they have, to have what he has. It cannot be bought, it has to be earned.’
