Bloodthirsty Cain on the rampage in Emmerdale as Caleb commits killer betrayal

Emmerdale’s Caleb Miligan (William Ash) has betrayed Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) and helped John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) go on the run.

Following the gorge jump, John recovered quite quickly. The injuries he sustained weren’t as severe as Aaron Dingle’s (Danny Miller), which meant he could focus on convincing other residents that Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) was responsible for the incident.

Robert was arrested and John did a fairly good job at turning other people against his brother.

Everything changed though when Aaron woke up from his coma. Almost immediately, he confirmed that John was holding Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb) hostage, leading to people also learning that he killed Nate.

Mackenzie was found, and the rest of the villagers were forced to try and come to terms with the fact John had been responsible for many life-threatening events that have taken place in their neighbourhood over the past year.

Up until yesterday, Caleb had every intention of assisting in his brother’s revenge plan.

He began by tricking John into thinking he would drive him to Rotterdam so he could go on the run. Caleb ended up driving John to a woodland instead, and then confronted him with a shotgun.

Caleb wasn’t going to pull the trigger though – it was going to be Cain.

As Cain and John’s showdown in the woods began, Caleb sat in the van, waiting for the moment where the gun would go off.

He suddenly had a change of heart (and remembered he does indeed have a moral compass) and raced back to his brother.

There, John announced that if Cain pulled the trigger, he would ensure an email gets sent to the police, confirming what really happened to Anthony Fox and how Ruby Miligan (Beth Cordingly) killed him.

To really back Caleb and Cain into a corner, John also said that if he got reported to the police, he would tell them about Anthony as well.

His quick thinking left Caleb realising that he would have to let John go in order to ensure his family’s safety. While Cain was aware of this, he was also consumed with rage and a need for revenge, which meant it felt as though he needed to do something.

A fight ensued and the gun went off, but tonight’s episode allowed us to learn that no one got shot.

This moment led to Caleb knocking Cain out by hitting him with a shovel. In a surprising turn of events, John realised that Caleb was planning on helping him after all, and just needed to prevent Cain from stopping him.

John and Caleb bundled Cain into the boot of his car. They then drove to the border in the van, planning on getting to Rotterdam.

John hid in the back and was very nearly caught by officers, but ultimately was in the clear.

Just before the episode ended, John handed Caleb a piece of paper with the location of Anthony Fox’s body. He also deleted the scheduled email to the police, telling Caleb that they’ve now completed their deal.

The rest of the scheme would see Caleb stop at a service station when he gets to Rotterdam. While away from the vehicle, John would escape and then go on the run.

As Caleb pondered over his decision to let the murderer walk free, Cain had escaped from the boot of the car.

He got into the driver’s seat with the shotgun beside him. Cain looked as though he had smoke coming out of his ears – but what will he do to his brother when he finds him?

Given the enormity of the betrayal, acting rationally isn’t going to be in Cain’s mind just yet,.

And is this really the last we’ve seen of John?
