Put your tops back on!

The heatwave London and the rest of the country is experiencing (Metro, Tue) may bring joy to some but people overlook the fact it is much easier to adjust to winter. This is for the simple reason you can add as many layers of clothes as
you wish to protect you from the cold but there is a limit to what you take off.

Or is there? I am referring to the grim sight of men who feel it is perfectly acceptable in a major world capital to parade shirtless through the streets, displaying their bloated, tattooed bellies to the world at large. Not a pleasant sight. Jules Stewart, London

What does St George’s flag mean?

We are constantly seeing plastic patriots wandering around bedecked in flags of St George (which I consider disrespectful to both flag and country).

Who is making and, more importantly, paying for these flags to be made and distributed? Who is paying for the cherry pickers and drivers to deface areas by putting up flags the vast majority consider an eyesore?

It is time these activities were investigated to find out who is behind and profiting from this blight.

The old saying ‘Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel’ is so apt today. A Lloyd, Liverpool

Tourust tax will ‘prevent the working class from travelling out of their designated areas’

It seems this Labour government is hell-bent on destroying the hospitality industry by allowing a possible £300 tourist tax on holidays in the UK to be introduced by regional authorities.

Of course, not only will jobs be placed at risk but it will prevent the working class from travelling out of their designated areas.

It seems the notion of ‘15-minute cities’ – where everything you need is within a quarter-of-an-hour walk – is closer than ever with the Labour Party. J Hall, Beckenham

Is the population still rising?

Your report on the ‘fall’ in net migration (Metro, Fri) implies we are wrong to think immigration remains a problem.

Net immigration last year was 171,000 – the lowest this century and down from 944,000 in 2023. But the bottom line is the population is still increasing.

To say ‘net migration falls’ is a misleading as saying ‘inflation fell last month to 2.8%’. People know prices are still rising, just at a slower rate.

Likewise, people know the population is still rising, just at a slower rate.

Your article says the figures ‘suggest
a gap between people’s perception and reality’. The ‘reality’ is that 171,000 more people arrived than left. And they all have to live somewhere. Julian, Orpington

Demonising minorities is ‘a tactic as old as time’

We don’t have to buy into the cynical narrative of demonising and punishing migrants and other minorities.

For politicians who bully others for personal gain, it’s all prevent the working class from travelling out of their designated areas. I

So why are we given headline stats with no context? There are more than 120million people globally displaced by war and persecution. Fewer than 0.09% of these came to the UK last year.

And why are we allowing government hostility to drive out the workers needed in health and care who pay taxes funding public services and pensions? Increasingly hostile legislation punishes courageous survivors who just want to be safe, work hard and support their families.

Let’s reject the divisive, distracting narrative and demand better of our media and leaders. Rebecca, Glasgow
