BBC Three sitcom Ghosts has been revealed to be the most highly anticipated Christmas special this year – despite drawing to a close after the fifth season.

The beloved show, which first aired in 2018, stars the likes of You actress Charlotte Ritchie and Taskmaster’s Kiell Smith-Bynoe, alongside some Horrible Histories favourites.

It follows Charlotte’s Alison and Kiell’s Mike who unexpectedly inherit a grand country estate and discover that not only is it falling apart, but it’s filled with ghosts throughout the ages.

And despite coming to an end after the fifth season, it’s said to be the Christmas TV special people are most excited for this year.

A new study sees the BBC comedy take the top spot, followed by shows including Doctor Who, Call the Midwife and Death in Paradise.

The research, conducted by online casino website CZR, used Google Keyword Planner to analyse nationwide searches for this year’s upcoming Christmas specials, from April through to October, to identify which have seen the biggest interest to date, with Ghosts coming out on top with 9,600 searches.

The special has attracted 179% more interest than the average reported across the top analysed shows, which is no surprise considering the episode will be the final show of the series.

Doctor Who follows with 5,860 searches, after David Tennant’s surprise return.

The Christmas special first look teased Big Brother icon Davina McCall’s appearance, and will see Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa take over the Tardis for his first on-screen adventure.

Call The Midwife has received 2,370 searches over the six month period, and will be returning this year for another Christmas special, while Death in Paradise follows in fourth place with 2,170 searches.

Meanwhile, Strictly Come Dancing – which ended on Saturday with Vito Coppola and Ellie Leach lifting the glitterball trophy – will be back on our screens in just days.

The Christmas special will see Danny CiprianiKeisha Buchanan and Dan Snow hit the dancefloor, with BBC Breakfast’s Sally Nugent and EastEnders actor Jamie Borthwick completing the line-up with Tillie Amartey.

The pre-recorded show, with the winner having already leaked online, has been searched 1,170 times in the run-up to Christmas.

It’s followed by All Creatures Great and Small in sixth place, and EastEnders in seventh, with fans desperately waiting to see which Walford man has been murdered by The Six.

Ghosts being crowned in top spot comes after fans were left devastated at the news it was ending.

In a statement published on the Ghosts team’s social media in March, it said: ‘After five incredible years haunting the halls of Button House, we have decided that the time is right to let our beloved sitcom Ghosts rest in peace.

‘We have just wrapped filming on our fifth and final series and we can’t wait to share it with you all later this year.

‘We could never have imagined the reception the show has enjoyed, or the fun we have had making it, and we would like to thank our amazing cast and crew as well as everyone at BBC Comedy, BBC1 and Monumental Television for their tireless support.’

Ghosts is available to stream on BBC iPlayer, with the Christmas special airing on Christmas Day on BBC One at 7.45pm.
