Jordan Henderson is unhappy at Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq and is targeting a return to the Premier League, according to reports.

Former Liverpool captain Henderson swapped Anfield for Saudi Arabia in the summer, a transfer which attracted huge criticism and backlash.

Many players have decided to head out to the Middle East given the huge transfer fees and wages teams are willing to pay – but some have accused Saudi Arabia of sportswashing due to their abysmal human rights record.

Homosexuality is illegal in the country and can even be punishable by death with LGBTQ+ groups and their allies angered by Henderson’s summer switch given the England international’s previous vocal support for the gay community.

But according to the Daily Mail, Henderson is already unsettled at Al-Ettifaq and is keen to make a comeback in the English top-flight as soon as possible.

Henderson will ‘seriously consider’ any offers from Premier League teams in the January transfer window, just six months after he moved to the Middle East.

The 33-year-old is thought to be unhappy with the heat and humidity of the playing conditions, while Al-Ettifaq’s abysmal attendance figures and the backlash he faced from the LGBTQ+ community are also believed to be factors.

Steven Gerrard and his assistant Ian Foster played key roles in convincing Henderson to join Al-Ettifaq but the former is under huge pressure as manager amid poor results while the latter recently resigned to take charge of Plymouth.

Henderson has already informed his Al-Ettifaq teammates that he is considering his future as he waits for an English side to register their interest.

Should Henderson leave Al-Ettifaq for the Premier League, he is set to lose millions of pounds in tax and lost wages.
