A doctor from Teesside has been charged with the attempted murder of a man after an alleged poisoning.
Thomas Kwan was held in custody after a brief hearing at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court today.
The 52-year-old, of Brading Court, Ingleby Barwick, is understood to work as a GP at a medical practice in Sunderland.
Wearing a yellow striped shirt and black trousers, the balding Hong Kong-born doctor did not enter any pleas.
He will appear at Newcastle Crown Court on March 6.
The alleged victim, a man aged in his 70s, was not one of Dr Kwan’s patients.
Emergency services raided a house in Brading Court last night, with firefighters pictured in specialist hazmat-style suits and facemasks.
Specialist paramedics and police were at the scene with multiple tents erected outside the property.
Officers remained at the house while investigations continued on Wednesday.
Northumbria Police is leading the investigation.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said on Tuesday: ‘As part of an ongoing investigation, an address in the Ingleby Barwick area of Stockton was being searched.
‘This led to the discovery of unknown substances and, as a precaution, officers are conducting further checks at the property.
‘There is believed to be no wider risk to the public and inquiries are ongoing.’
The Happy House Surgery in Sunderland’s website lists Dr Kwan as a partner.
A practice spokesperson said: ‘We are not able to comment as this is a police investigation.
‘The practice remains open and our priority is to ensure continuity of care and services for our patients at this time.’
