Liam Payne’s girlfriend Kate Cassidy has made a heartbreaking admission about her journey back to the UK following his death.

On October 16, 2024, the beloved One Direction star died at the age of 31, having fallen from his hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Fans were in disbelief, entering a period of mourning for the hugely popular singer, with his 1D bandmates all penning emotional tributes.

It took several weeks for the Strip That Down hitmaker’s funeral to be arranged, as his body remained in South America amid police investigations.

Eventually, a private service was held on November 20 at Saint Mary’s Church in Amersham, Buckinghamshire.

Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, and Zayn Malik all attended Payne’s funeral, joining his family and several famous faces, including James Corden and Simon Cowell, plus ex Cheryl and Payne’s young son Bear.

Among other attendees was partner Kate, who had friend Damian Hurley by her side for support and had flown over from America to say her final goodbyes.

Now, the social media personality, 26, has revealed she had to ask a pal to pay for her flight to the UK so she could be there, as she was unable to afford the trip herself.

Taking to TikTok following a recent trip, Kate responded to a sarcastic comment appearing to criticise her for flying economy.

Initially, she joked that it was ‘the most embarrassing thing [she’s] ever done’, before getting serious, saying she ‘couldn’t believe’ she was being trolled for not flying first class.

‘Why is flying economy so embarrassing?’, she asked. ‘I don’t understand.

‘I think it’s such a privilege to be able to get on a plane and to be able to choose a destination anywhere in the world that you wanna go to.’

Reflecting on her relationship with Payne, who left behind a £24million fortune without a will, she continued: ‘I understand that, a couple of years ago, I was in a very different position in my life.’

She and her celebrity boyfriend, whom she met while waitressing at a restaurant, would often travel together, and he would shower her with designer purchases.

‘I think that, if you can afford to fly business or first class, good for you. I hope that, in the future, maybe I can be able to fly first class again. That would be great.

‘At the end of the day, we’re all on the same plane, going to the same destination. Who really cares where you’re sitting?’

‘Last year, I couldn’t even afford the flight to get to London for my boyfriend’s funeral,’ Kate then shared. ‘I couldn’t even afford an economy flight.

‘I had to have a friend book it for me.

‘A year later, I’m able to even just book a flight and travel and go to Europe and to Finland and do all these things and book these hotels, and I’m just so grateful. I don’t think people should judge for wherever you’re sitting on a plane.’

Fans in the comments were quick to offer Kate support after the nasty comment, with @ssloopss writing: ‘Idc what anyone says, this girl is so real. She shares EVERYTHING, and really digs into what life for her is like. Shes essentially an open book.’

‘You should feel so proud of yourself… Liam definitely would be 💚’, said @happylittleweirdo.

‘I honestly don’t believe Liam would’ve wanted everyone to hate on his gf like this. Doesn’t matter your opinion, the hate must stop for healing to occur, for everyone’, @xyzed432 commented.

Kate’s latest post comes after she returned to the home she shared with her late boyfriend, which left her in floods of tears.

She said in a raw and honest video that she had been sitting outside the house in England for 45 minutes, explaining that she had ‘never felt this much pain’.

‘It’s just really hard to wrap my head around the fact that I’m not pulling in the driveway and going home to him being there,’ she told her followers.

‘You really just never know what life is going to bring. Life can bring you plenty of happiness and plenty of joy. I’ve experienced it all. But I’ve never felt this much pain.’

‘I came back to the town that me and Liam had a life in and where we were happy,’ Kate continued. ‘I’ve only been here for two days; I really, really thought that this trip would help me move forward. But I feel like this trip has been the opposite for me.’

She added through tears that she would ‘do absolutely anything’ to ‘walk into the house with him waiting for [her] on the couch’.

‘I’ve been doing a lot of things that me and Liam would enjoy, and instead of it bringing me comfort, it’s really just brought me nothing but sadness. I feel like I’m just five steps backwards,’ she added of her grief.

‘And I do love being here. I know that makes no sense because I’m sitting here crying my eyes out, saying that it’s bringing me so much sadness, but I love it so much because I was just so in love with him.

‘Here, where it all started. Our life really, really began together, and it’s just been really hard.’

Kate dated the Familiar singer for about two years, having first been spotted with him in October 2022.

She had been with him in Argentina, where they also attended bandmate Niall’s concert, but left to go back to Florida just two days before his fatal fall.

Since, she’s documented her grieving journey online, telling the world that she will ‘always love’ him, which is something her future partners will also have to accept.

She also previously posted a photo of a note that Payne – whose exes include Maya Henry and Cheryl – wrote for her, which said he wanted to either marry her or get engaged within the next year. It was written weeks before he died.
